In 1965, Roberto Pignataro staged a retrospective exhibition in downtown Buenos Aires—but this was not the typical gallery-based event one would expect from this era. Several unconventional elements set this event apart, making it a compelling subject for closer examination.

This article revisits a violent episode in Argentine history—the 1955 bombing of Plaza de Mayo—and explores whether echoes of that trauma, however obliquely, might be reflected in a series of abstract works Roberto Pignataro exhibited eight years later.

1960-1982: The Exhibition Period

Roberto Pignataro was an Argentine Informalist artist. He became very active in the Buenos Aires art scene in the late 1950s, producing up to two exhibitions per year until the mid-1980s when he retired.

During this period, Pignataro developed distinctive forms of abstraction, which he commonly materialized as mixed media compositions including oil painting, paper collage, assemblage, and other techniques.

His exhibitions were typically held at traditional art venues in downtown Buenos Aires, including“Galería J. Peuser”, “Galería Van Riel”, “Galería Lirolay” and “Asociación Estímulo de Bellas Artes”. He also experimented with less conventional venues, such as pop-up exhibits at galleria malls and self-publishing abstract books.

Pignataro’s artistic trajectory spanned four decades, including:

  • LRA Radio Nacional art contest (1957)

  • Twenty-seven solo art exhibitions (1959-1982)

  • Two collective art shows: "Los Pintores Argentinos en LRA Radio Nacional“ (1958) and “Collages” (1982)

  • Three self-published art books (1968, 1972, 1974)

  • One international exhibition at the Miami Museum of Modern Art, USA (1970).

  • A total of 400 original art pieces exhibited, often at historical Buenos Aires art venues such as Galería Lirolay, Galería Van Riel, and Salón J. Peuser.

  • One original collage and copies of two of his art books were acquired by the permanent collection of the Buenos Aires Museum of Modern Art.
